Dear Agony Aunt

I think my boyfriend is very depressed..
I think if I told him what I thought he would be very upset and angry.

What do I do ?

Dear Worried

You don't say why you think he is depressed, has he stopped going outside, has he stopped eating, is he sleeping all the time?

What has happened in his life to start this spate of depression?

Maybe if you talked to him or some of his family about what is happening in his life you may find out more.

Be supportive and try talking to him , you don't have to mention the word depression.

Good luck

hey.....
if you feel that he is depresed then take him out even if its just the day then when you get home talk to him about it and he should open up to you as you are in love...good luck

Just sit him down and tell him you're concerned about him and mention why- what behaviours of his have changed lately. Asking him how he's feeling because if he's down you'd like to help.

Enlist his family and friends for support. It's good to do something before it gets severe. Encourage him to go to his doctor.

It can only be classified as depression if it's been going on a long time in which case reading books on depression or consulting a therapist might help. But if it's only been a few weeks he might just be going through a rough patch or be upset by something. If you can get him to communicate - through gentle persuasion without pressure- you'll have all the facts& you'll be able to help, so you won't worry as much. But ultimately, he has to help himself.
